In 1920 C.W. Oatley founded the Tilden Society at BMS to promote science within the school by inviting lecturers to speak on topical science. Teachers were also involved in the Tilden society performing demonstrations in the style of the Christmas Lecture as recently as the 1970's.

In 2007 a group of enthusiastic and dedicated Year 12 students have been gathered together in the name of science. The group is dedicated to offering activities which will stimulate those who are interested in science in a variety of ways.
