Years 7 & 8
The combined Science course for the Middle School Years is co-ordinated by Mr. Trevor Rex.
Students of this age are naturally curious about their surroundings. There are very few students who, when they see something, do not ask, "How does it work?" Within the Middle School Science course we aim to develop and encourage this natural enthusiasm.
Practical work is at the core of the course. Subject specialists teach all lessons in properly equipped laboratories. Our activities are designed to develop the knowledge of our students as well as their individual skills. Throughout the practical programme students are taught how to work safely in the laboratory, recognising hazards and managing risk.
The course content is based upon, but not restricted by, the requirements of the National Curriculum. The topics are designed to provide an equal coverage of Biology, Chemistry and Physics over the two year course. The aim is to prepare give all students a solid foundation for the study of the sciences at GCSE.
In years 7 and 8 students have seven periods of Science per academic cycle. Homework is set twice a week and each task is designed to take about twenty five minutes. The task could take the form of writing a practical report, specific questions, mini projects, planning experiments, reading and research, preparing a presentation, revision or reviewing recent work.
At the end of each topic there is an across-the-year test, there are formal examinations at the start of the summer term. Students and teachers can discuss progress throughout the course as students use 'Traffic lights' to help identify areas where they need to develop their skills. The traffic lights are given to students at the start of each topic and are available via the links to the left.
